Haryana Chief Minister
Bhupinder Singh Hooda has proposed to develop Regional Rapid Transit System
along Delhi-Gurgaon-Rewari-Alwar corridor to provide efficient and cost
effective transport to the commuters.
Speaking at the conference on ‘Smarter cities: Transforming India, City
by City’ organized by the IBM’s Smarter Cities Forum in Gurgaon
today, Mr Hooda described Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Global Corridor as a
unique initiative of Haryana Government. This expressway would act as a
catalyst for the development of various economic activities along its corridor,
he added.
The Chief Minister expressed confidence that with the pro-active policies of
his government in urban development, Haryana will be able to revolutionize its
cities. Haryana on one hand is facilitating construction of
housing, commercial, industrial, institutional space and at the same time
creating and revamping the civic facilities. We have carefully studied the
emerging trends and sought to anticipate the multi-dimensional challenges, he
said.
Mr Hooda said that Haryana has been able to harness the progressive thrust of
industrialization by steering it and channelizing it with innovative systems
and pragmatic strategies. The state-of-the-art infrastructure,
industry-friendly policies, responsive administration, peaceful law and order
conditions and abundant skilled manpower has made Haryana a preferred
investment destination among domestic and foreign investors.
Mr Hooda said that as we address the emergent needs of urban populace, we keep
on learning, innovating and moving forward. Understanding the dynamic nature of
urbanization, we are taking initiatives for defining the skylines and
landscapes of our towns. However, he said that we need to have some patience,
as most of our major infrastructure projects have a long gestation period.
“There is no room for any complacency, but I am sure that in the years to come,
we would be able to revolutionize our cities”,he added.
Mr Hooda said that Haryana is a pioneering state in implementing unique
Public-Private- Partnership (PPP) model for urban development. While the State
Government develops the basic infrastructure including trunk services, the
private providers develop colonies for residential, commercial, industrial
institutional and other uses. A number of infrastructure projects like bus
terminals, transport services including metro projects, tourism projects
can be taken up under PPP. As a matter of fact, Haryana has shown
the way in executing PPP projects in urban transport sector. Our intra-city
mono-rail project that is the Rapid Metro of Gurgaon is being developed
primarily on PPP mode.
Mr Hooda said that we are making concerted efforts to build quality
infrastructure in all the towns of the State. Our towns, especially those in
the neighborhood of Delhi, are becoming more and more attractive for
residential and professional purposes. We are also taking steps to improve transport
and communication facilities between Delhi and our towns. Gurgaon is already
connected with Delhi Metro and efforts are on to take metro to Faridabad,
Bhadurgarh, Sonipat and Panipat. These links will make the communication
between Delhi and Haryana much easier.
Mr
Hooda said that from being primarily an agrarian state, Haryana has come a long
way and has found its rightful place on the industrial map of not just the
country, but also of the world. It is now an industrial giant and has emerged
as an ideal location for industrialists and investors alike.
Mr Hooda said that urbanization results in growing demand for more efficient,
livable and sustainable cities. We hope that with concerted efforts, we would
be able to transform our existing cities and make them livable and sustainable,
sooner than later. At the same time, we are catering to the tomorrow’s needs of
education and health care. The Rajiv Gandhi Education City is one of our
most ambitious projects. We are proud to have an IIM and a Central
university, a Defence University, AIIMS II, the National Institute of
Design and a number of professional and technical institutions are being set up
in Haryana. We are also augmenting our health care infrastructure. Four new medical
colleges are being opened. Private sector has also set up a number of
super-speciality hospitals.
Earlier, the Managing Director of IBM India, Mr Shankar Annaswamy welcomed Mr
Hooda and said that as we develop our urban cities, we need to keep in mind the
most important factors of transportation, energy and public safety. The
Chairman of the Board of IBM Corporation, Mr Samuel J. Palmisano dwelt upon
various aspects concerning urban development and emphasized that Smarter city
leaders have to think and manage for the long time.
Mr Hooda was also
presented with a memento. He also saw a presentation on various aspects of
urban development like energy and utilities, transportation and public safety.
On this
occasion, MLA Badshahpur Rao Dharampal, Media Advisor to Chief Minister Mr Shiv
Bhattia, Deputy Commissioner Mr P.C. Meena, Commissioner of Police Mr K.K.
Sindhu and other dignitaries were also present.
