GoI issues no objection certificate to Rohtak MC

CHANDIGARH, AUG 1
The Culture Ministry of Government of India has released No Objection Certificate to Rohtak Municipal Corporation for repair, renovation, reconstruction of public streets, drains and laying sewer, water supply line, street lights on existing pole in Khokhrakot ancient area of Rohtak.
An official letter to this effect was handed over to the Chairman of Haryana Assembly Petition Committee and Rohtak MLA, Mr Bharat Bhushan Batra by the Director (Monument) of Archaeological Survey of India, Dr M. Nambirajan at the meeting of the Petition Committee at Haryana Bhawan in New Delhi today.
Presiding over the meeting, Mr Batra said that the ancient site of Khokhrakot in Rohtak was declared protected area by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in year 1938 and a notification was issued for about 225 acre land for protection of ancient remains. Later on, 100 metre area from the Khokhrakot protected area was declared as prohibited area and next 200 metre was also declared as regulated area in the year 1992. He said that therefore, no construction work and developmental works could be undertaken in the area without permission of Archaeological Survey of India and National Monuments Authority.
He said that there were no developmental works in the area for the last two decades and the residents of the area were living in inhuman conditions. There were no regular arrangements for sewer, drinking water, streets and electricity for them. He said that now, the National Monuments Authority has permitted the undertaking of developmental works in the prohibited and regulated area adjacent to Khokhrakot ancient area. It will pave the way for providing necessary civic facilities to the residents of this unprotected area.
Mr Batra directed the officers of Rohtak Municipal Corporation to start the public developmental works with immediate effect under the guidance of Chandigarh Circle of Archaeological Survey of India and adequate public utility facilities to the residents in Khokhrakot ancient area.
Mr Batra especially expressed his gratitude towards Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda who had written letters to Government of India for undertaking the developmental works in the Khokhrakot ancient area.
It was also decided in the meeting that the park would be developed in the protected area of Khokhrakot ancient area and interpretation centre would also be setup for providing information regarding history of this ancient site to the people and construction of a site museum. These works would be jointly undertaken by the Archaeological Survey of India and Rohtak Municipal Corporation.
It is worth to mention here that in year 2012, the residents of Tej Colony of Rohtak had submitted an application for starting developmental works in Khokhrakot ancient area to Rohtak MLA and the Chairman of Haryana Assembly Petition Committee, Mr B.B. Batra. Mr Batra discussed the matter with the various departments of Haryana Government, National Monuments Authority and   Archaeological Survey of India in the meetings. With the result of these efforts, the Culture Ministry of Government of India has released No Objection Certificate to Rohtak Municipal Corporation for repair, renovation, reconstruction of public streets, drains and laying sewer, water supply line, street lights on existing pole in Khokhrakot ancient area of Rohtak.
The Mayor of Rohtak Mrs Renu Dabla, Joint Commissioner of Rohtak Municipal Corporation Mr Amarjeet Jain, Superintending Archaeologist, Chandigarh Circle Mr Vikash Sharma, Assistant Town Planner Mr K.K. Varshney and Deputy Director of Haryana Archaeological and Museum department Mr Ranvir Shastri and a number of other Senior Officers of concerned departments also participated in the meeting.
