Amendment to PRI Act widely accepted: CM

CHANDIGARH, JAN 13
Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal  said that overwhelming response,  beyond  the expectations of the government, has been received to the ongoing elections to the Panchayati Raj Institutions in the state.  Out of more than 28000 candidates, over 16000 have been elected unanimously which clearly proves the amendment to the PRI Act has been widely accepted by the people.
          The Chief Minister also lauded the efforts of the Deputy Commissioners for successful completion of first phase of fifth general election to Panchayati Raj Institutions held on January 10, 2016, and he hoped that the same efforts would be made in the next two phases of the elections, for which polling is to be held on January 17 and 24. He also lauded the active role of media in coverage of first phase of PRI elections in the state.
            The Chief Minister, who was holding a video-conference with Deputy Commissioners here today, said that polling of first phase was successfully completed as compared to previous years except isolated incidents in some places. This has proved that amendment made by government in PRI Act, which was also upheld by the court, has been accepted by the people
            In reply to a question, he said that electoral rolls were being revised to include new eligible electors on attaining the age of 18 years. He said that recommendations for holding Local Bodies election would be made as soon as the work of revision of electoral rolls is completed. It is expected that this exercise would take about two month’s period, he added.
            In reply to another query, he said that Haryana government would support the Central government recommendations, if any, regarding educational qualification mandatory for election to Assembly and Parliament.          The Chief Minister extended the greetings to the people on the occasion of Lohri, Makar Sakranti, Pongal and Bihu to be celebrated this month.
            Agriculture Minister Mr. O.P. Dhankar, BJP State President Mr. Subhash Barala, PSCM Mr Rajesh Khullar, Additional Chief Secretary Finance Mr. Sanjeev Kaushal, Principal Secretary and Director General Dr Abhilaksh Likhi, OSD Mr. Vijay Sharma and Media Advisor Mr. Amit Arya were also present on this occasion.
