Punjab restrict Gujarat to 218 for 6 in Vijay Merchant Trophy

CHANDIGARH, JAN 9
Gujarat after winning the toss and opting to bat were restricted by Punjab to 218 for 6 in 95 overs by Punjab at close of first day's play in the Vijay Merchant Trophy quarter-final being played at Alur Cricket Stadium in Bengaluru.
Gujarat opened their innings with S.S.Patel and T.S. Gosain but soon met with a reverse as opener T.S.Gosain was caught by Shubman Gill off medium pacer Kulwinder Singh for 6 with team’s total reading 16 for 01 in 9 overs. At this stage S.S Patel was joined by U.R. Kumar and the duo started the rebuilding process by adding 78 runs for the 2nd wicket before S.S. Patel was caught by Abhishek Sharma off Madhav Pathania for a well made 46 off 106 balls inclusive of 10 boundaries, reducing Gujarat to 84 for 2 in 36 overs.
Next man in P.R.Mishra was trapped in front by left arm spinner Abhishek Sharma before the batsman could open his account. U.R. Kumar who had been keeping one end up was cleaned up by Madhav Singh Pathania for 29 off 108 balls inclusive of 3 boundaries and one six. Pathania struck again to trap M.R. Vacha for 2 reducing Gujarat to a precarious position of 95 for 5.
At this stage Sanpreet Bagga and N.M. Yadav started the rescue act and kept the maurading Punjab bowlers at way and in the process added 121 runs for the 6th wicket to take their team past the 200 mark. N.M. Yadav was the first to go being caught by Abhishek Sharma off Dipin Chitkara for 47 off 132 runs studded with 6 boundaries with the total reading 216 for 6. Sanpreet Singh Bagga remained unbeaten on 71 off 176 balls inclusive of 14 hits to the boundary. Gujarat were 218 for 6 at close of play.
For Punjab Madhav Singh Pathania (3 for 24), Kulwinder Singh (1 for 36), Abhishek Sharma (1 for 42) and Dipin Chitkara (1 for 20) shared the spoils.
