The Haryana Government is framing its first film policy for the promotion of Haryanvi films, local artists and cinema. A committee has been constituted for the purpose under the chairmanship of Mr V S Kundu, Additional Chief Secretary, Tourism. It has had two meetings so far, first in Chandigarh and second at Gurugam.
Renowned film-maker, Mr Satish Kaushik, has been appointed non-official member and co-chairman of the committee. The other members include Excise and Taxation Commissioner, Director, Urban Local Bodies Department, Media Advisor to Chief Minister and a representative of the Finance Department.
Mr Sameer Pal Srow, Director, Information, Public Relations and Languages Department, would be member-secretary of the committee, and Director of ‘Pagdi: The Honour’ Film, Mr Rajiv Bhatia, has been included as a non-official member.
The second meeting of the committee was held at Gurugram. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Satish Kaushik said that cinema offered a powerful medium to promote culture, and now, Indian cinema has acquired new identification in the world. In this direction, film policy is being framed to promote directors and artists, and Haryanvi culture.
Presently, Haryana has no such policy while small states have such policies and Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bhojpuri and Punjabi films are gaining popularity.
Mr. Kaushik also suggested organising national and international level film festivals in the state to prepare a congenial environment for film production. Various scenic spots are available in the state for shooting purposes and these need to be developed and presented before the film makers, he added.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Kundu said that suggestions from all stakeholders, including those from Haryana working in the film industry, would be invited for giving practical shape to the film policy. The objective of the policy is to attract film makers towards Haryana so that maximum number of films could be produced in the state.
This would provide employment opportunity to artists and youth and they would also get a chance to get associated with film industry. It would also be considered to include short films, animated films and tele-films in the film policy, he added.
Mr. Srow said there was no shortage of scenic shooting spots in the state. There are deserts in Bhiwani-Mahendragarh area, hills in Morni area, lakes and rivers in Yamunanagar, and modern cities in Gurugram area. Apart from this, there is a large number of historical places in the state, he added.
