GRD School, Sangrur score hard-fought 4-3 win against Malwa School

 CHANDIGARH, JAN 23
GRD School of Sangrur registered a hard-fought 4-3 verdict against Malwa School, Ludhiana in the 13th All-India Balwant Singh Kapur Hockey Tournament (under-17) at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar today.
Spring Dale School, Amritsar got the better of Government Senior Secondary School, Mitthapur (Jalandhar) by 3-2 on penalties.
In the first match, GRD School of Sangrur had established a commanding 3-0 lead and it looked like to a one-sided affair. However, Malwa School fought back and reduced the margin to 2-3 by scoring two successive goals. After that both teams dished out good, competitive hockey before GRD School of Sangrur just managed to record well-deserved victory.
GRD School of Sangrur led 1-0 at half time. Jagjot Singh converted a penalty corner in th 34th minute to double the margin for Sangrur school. Then Bhanu Sharma made it 3-0 with a field goal in the 37th minute. Swinging into action Malwa school launched counter-attacks and their captain Navpreet Singh got his team's first goal in the 39th minute.
Encouraged with the initial success, Malwa School further reduced the margin through Amanjeet Singh in the 46th minute. GRD School of Sangrur increased their margin in the 58th minute when Jagjot Singh got the better of Malwa School defence before scoring (4-2). A field goal by Harjeet Singh helped Malwa School narrow the margin by scoring a field goal in the 60th minute (3-4).
With this well-earned verdict GRD School of Sangrur qualified for league stage.
The match between Spring Dale School and Government Senior Secondary School, Mitthapur ended in a one-one draw in the regulation period. The deadlock was resolved on shoot-out where the Amritsar school emerged winners. For the winners during shoot out Rajdeep Singh and Rajbir Singh scored and helped their team win. Vishal Yadav got the solitary goal for Mitthapur school.
In the third match of the day, Baba Gurmukh Singh Uttam Singh, Khadur Sahib defeated Government Senior Secondary School, Chhharat (Amritsar) by 3-1. The half time score was 1-1. Seeratpal Singh gave Baba Gurmukh Singh Uttam Singh, Khadur Sahib the lead in the first half while Tarsbir Singh restored parity. On crossing over, Parvinder Singh and Prabhjot Singh scored one goal each while paved the way for Baba Gurmukh Singh Uttam Singh, Khadur Sahib post victory.
